Constructivism and Photography

As the world was evolving to a quicker pace due to the industrial revolution, the art and design scene was evolving as well. The world was exposed to new technology and inventions such as cameras, airplanes and railways. With these inventions people started to view the world from a different angle. This inspired artists to produce works that are not literal, hence there was the rise of the Avant-Grade movement.

What is the Avant-Garde Movement?
It is where works seems unorthodox compare to the traditional arts. Some movements that were branched off from the Avant-Garde movement includes: Cubism, Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, Constructivism etc.

The objective of this post is to discuss the rise of Constructivism in Russia and how photography is being influenced. Constructivist photographic technique includes: extreme foreshortening, shooting diagonally, top down and bottom up. These techniques produces extreme perspectives which ties back to the Avant-Garde movement where creations were unconventional.

These techniques can be seen on works by Alexander Rodchenko, a pioneer of Russian Constructivism. Rodchenko’s approach was to combine traditional elements with unusual angles such as the ‘bird’s eye’ and ‘worm’s eye’ views (“The Visual Revolution”).

In conclusion the Avant-Garde movement has paved the way for a change in the arts industry and up till today we are still using the word “Avant-Garde”. It has truly revolutionised a way to create and think from a different perspective.
